Esther ch.3: Mordecai refuses to bow

From Esther ch.3. A painting of Mordecai refusing to bow to Haman. Most likely a refusal to bow to a Agagite, not a deity/idol thing. Refusing, as a Jew, to bow to a cultural enemy.

I wold have spent more time on details and such since it's a rather large canvas (16x20"), but the closest it will be seen is from at least 20 feet away. It's an illustration for our Esther series at RCLB. Each week, someone is doing a painting to illustrate that week's chapter. So I went w/ 'mural' detail levels... just trying to get the general feel. Let me know what you think.

Rose and Crossbones

All I could think about this weekend was how much I didn't like the rose in my last post. Here's a bit more traditional look. No yellow-highlighter this time, just red and black ballpoint pens. :)

Dinner Before Dishonor

I had the honor this week of contributing a piece of chalkboard art for Jeff and Liv's Apartment Therapy photo shoot. Takes me back to my Trader Joe's, blackboard-art days. Oh the memories. I like the composition, even if I think he looks a bit more like a seagull than an eagle. Oh well, it's chalk after all. And it gets bonus points for being really big.

This last one is actually pretty disturbing. Believe me, I don't fantasize about blood impacts or people(zombies) getting shot in the head, it's just sometimes a grim part of my job as a vfx artist. This stuff is mostly observations of the motion and general look and feel from different references. Takes a strong stomach to make it through the day...

I'm in the process of updating my professional/portfolio website (www.arthaak.com), which means that I'm pruning it way back and getting rid of most of the 'non-essential' art on there. So it's going to find a home on this blog, which is supposed to be updated more often w/ stuff of the 'concept art' and 'sketch' persuasion. Enjoy!
